Finally I got TV-out (S-video) working on my Thinkpad T42

I have a Thinkpad T42 with a "ATI Mobility FireGL 9000". It has a TV-out port but it doesn't work
out of the box on linux.

I've used the proprietary driver to get that working, but that was too much work. I was using the open source driver on day-by-day basis, and changing to the proprietary driver only when using TV-out. Things got worse when new packages of the proprietary driver came and it stopped working, then I figured out that support for my card was dropped, as it's "too" old.

After a while, and the new series season started, I decided I had to get it working again, period :)

Finally I got. I'm using Ubuntu Gutsy, Xorg 7.3 (1.3.0), and Xrandr is the answer.

To enable S-video detection you gotta run:

xrandr --output S-video --set load_detection 1

To enable S-video output:

xrandr --output S-video --auto

Note that S-video output is 800x600 and looks like you can't/shouldn't change. So you will get your desktop on TV also, but it will have a different screen size (I do hope you're not using 800x600 nowadays... hehe).

To get your screen size compatible with your TV output, and to make Xv work without any other step just run:

xrandr --output LVDS --off

This will disable the Thinkpad LCD display.

Now you can run mplayer/xine/whatever and it will correctly shows up on your TV.

To enable the thinkpad LCD again:

xrandr --output LVDS --auto

And to turn Tv-out off:

xrandr --output S-video --off

That's it.

I ask myself "how the hell do

I ask myself "how the hell do you dodge an world of warcraft gold attack you can't even SEE?"Melee DPSers in your raid are playing very badly, increasing the damage to your tank and wow power leveling decreasing their own damage output. Mobs do dodge from behind, but they don't parry or block. Simply fighting from behind world of warcraft gold a mob results in an increase of 5% in your DPS on most mobs because you cut cheap wow gold parry out, plus you avoid giving the mob the 'next world of warcraft gold swing is 50% faster' that they get on a successful parry.Don't forget that wow powerleveling some even get BONUS attacks when they parry. I can't tell you how many times we wiped on Gruul because of hateful world of warcraft gold strikes...Melee DPS should always be behind mobs as much as possible in raids.I've learned that attacking players from the back means they can't block, parry, or dodge. Is this the same with wow power leveling mobs? It's supposed to be the case, however I'm not sure if it always works that way in practice.i have never heard world of warcraft gold anything about hitting a player from behind making it so they cant cheap wow gold dodge or parry, in raids melee classes never go behind there targets so i assume there is no such thing world of warcraft gold and its the same for mobs.Yes, players can block parry or dodge attacks from behind. Even against a rogue ambushing from buy wow gold stealth that the player wasn't even aware that they were there. The same applies world of warcraft gold to NPCs. The only time positioning matters is that the target needs to be in front of you, and some rogue and druid catform abilities wow power leveling require you to be either behind or in front of your target.Players CANNOT Dodge block or parry attacks that come from behind them.NPCS CANNONT BLOCK OR PARRY attacks that world of warcraft gold come from behind them.NPCS CAN dodge attacks from behind BUT players cannot.this is why in a raid all melee classes wow gold kaufen need to attack from behind the boss in order to reduce the amount of parries.I understand that world of warcraft gold this forum is for beginners.but when a beginner asks a question, please understand what you are talking about before wow powerleveling you spread misinformation.keep in mind that you can MISS from all directions. So if you are a rogue and you ambush a player, they dofus kamas wont BLOCK it, but you can MISS your attack.

Thanks a ton! I've been loving Ubuntu for the past 6 months but a few days ago, the need for S-video came up and it became a show stopper. Without this post I may have been forced to find "other" alternatives. Works great though. Thanks again!

Hi The decsription works

Hi
The decsription works pretty fine, but is there a way to change the PAL svideo to ntsc.
My Beamer shows the images, but they flicker with a very high frequency.
All other effects are working though, but the flickering (shifting the image from left to right) is pretty crazy.
The colours are correctly displayed, but the rapid moving is very disturbing.
Ubuntu Hardy, IBM Thinkpad T40.
In WinXP I can change the Thinkvantage Presentation Director from PAL to NTSC, and with pal, exactly the same nasty flickering as with Ubuntu occurs. With NTSC (on Winxp) it works fine

You should get NTSC output

You should get NTSC output with this: "xrandr --output S-video --set tv_standard ntsc"

Thanks for the Info

Perfect! This works like a charm! By the way, it only works when using the default video driver and not the 'advanced'.(ati accelerated driver)
I used the following script to make it a bit easier:

Thank you thank you thank you. I was just about ready to consider my shiny new RF modulator a complete waste of money. The only tricky thing is that my old CRT television chops off the far right end of my display. However, for watching TV on NBC and CBS (ABC doesn't support Linux) works fine if you use the Compiz-Fusion 'Zoom' feature to adjust the video output just right. I'm just stoked that this is even possible.
